Van Peperzeel is a large collector of used lead acid batteries in the Netherlands. The company was founded on October 3rd 1978 by W.A. van Peperzeel. Today, the second family generation is running the business. The annual collection amounts to many thousands of tonnes of old car-, forklift- and truck batteries. They work together with nationally operating wholesalers in the automotive industry. The batteries are prepared for recycling and delivered to acknowledged processors in Europe.
In addition to the lead acid battery collection, Van Peperzeel is active in buying and selling of various non-ferrous metals. About 5.000 tonnes of non-ferrous metals and non-ferrous residues (such as old license plates, rims, car spent catalytic converters and a variety of industrial waste such as skimming’s and turnings) passes their weighing scales annually.
The company is the national sorting center of waste consumer batteries. They work for Stibat (the Battery foundation) who is responsible in the Netherlands to help producers and importers to carry out their obligation to collect and process used consumer batteries. Van Peperzeel is also collecting on behalf of Stibat in the Netherlands the E-bike batteries. Last but not least Van Peperzeel collects Li-ion batteries coming from Hybrid cars, PHEV-, HEV- and full EV car batteries. Recycling of these last kind of batteries is something new, but growing fast in the EU.
Johan van Peperzeel, the managing director, is a member (and chairman) of the EBRA (European Battery Recycling Association, red.) and often receives requests for his advice and consultancy concerning the processing of consumer- and industrial- batteries throughout Europe. He is also board member of the Dutch metal recycling federation, the MRF.
Van Peperzeel has delivered battery sorting installations to Norway, Greece, Ireland and Germany. These sorting installations have been developed on the basis of their own experiences they got by sorting all kind of batteries in the last 20 years.
At this moment Van Peperzeel organizes conferences in and outside Europe about sorting installations, education and training of people who’ll be responsible for operating the battery sorting installations. This includes the field of recycling of new chemistry of batteries which are today already ending up in collection of recycling companies all over Europe.
